Does it matter how long I have been insured to make a claim on contents insurance?

05 May

Hi all, Ive been with my insurance company about 2 months and I need to make a claim, is this too soon, will they pay out or will it just be too much hassle?
Its my sofa, my partner was painting the ceiling and my friends little boy came running in and knocked the paint over. I know its a cliche, as Im sure lots of ppl scam this way, but its genuine.

They’ll pay out, if it’s a covered cause of loss.

If it is a covered loss and over your deductible, file your claim.

If the claim happened after your effective date and it is a covered loss they will pay out.

if its a covered loss they will pay out minus your deductible. it is very early after writing your policy to make a claim, and it will raise a red flag with your company. if its a small claim you may not want to claim this. the more claims you get the more likely they will non renew your policy.

You are covered immediately from the time you make your first payment. That is no problem.

However, someone spilling paint on your sofa is not a covered loss under renters or homeowners insurance. It covers fire and theft.

Call your agent and they will tell you.

car253 is right, it is probably not a covered cause of loss anyway. You should check your policy to be sure, before filing a claim.

Im assuming you have a renters or homeowners insurance.
You will NOT be covered for that. That is called “negligence” in insurance language. Your policy will only cover you for fire/hazard.

If it was one of the perils that you would have coverage for however, time wouldnt matter. Only guideline is that there can be no pre-existing damage to your article at the time of writing the policy.
